My 1963 House has a skip-troweled finish over drywall. I do not care for this much & would like a smooth finish. I have had a couple of plaster contractors in to provide estimates & they assure me this can be done. However, before I spend $1,500-$2000 doing this I want to make sure It’s not going to be filled with cracks or falling off the walls in a couple of years.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Paul

Unless you change the current drywall to blueboard, one cannot plaster over regular drywall (sheetrock). They can skim the current drywall with joint compound or a setting compound but not with plaster.
go to the us gypsum site and look it up. you can skim-coat plaster over drywall if you put the right retarder on it.....
it's all in the prep..Mike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
I have this done often have had no problems to date some jobs are over 8 years old.
Over existing drywalls that have been painted (i assumed it has been painted) My plaster contractor seals alcohol or oil primer/sealer (the sealer step may be because we do a colored plaster that is the finish product), Plaster- Weld primer and than plaster
Another "yea" vote.
As previousy posted, proper prep and Plaster-Weld will help things along quite nicely.
Yep, it can be done. Be aware though that this process is alot like grouting tile. The whole trowel process is a bit different then just veneering plaster on flat walls. The plaster has to be worked in to key to the skiptrowel texture. If there are gaps and voids behind the plaster, it may pop off.
