Help to identify this chimney patch material?
I’ve attached an image of a patch in the chimney of our 1920’s house. My guess is that it covers the flu left when switching from a coal-fired furnace to natural gas. It’s kind of spongy – which I associate with asbestos. Any idea what this material could be? I’d like to remove it and patch the bricks up properly. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Looks like mortar. In the early 20th century they use to mix lime and other additives to mortar. Maybe a little asbestos mixed in?
