I was questioned today by a carpenter and this is what he is doing. He wants to know if it is okay to sister a 2×6 to a roof truss and cantilever it out appx. 6′ beyond the wall. He wants to sister it to the rafter for about 10′ inside the house, and then 6′ outside the house. This extended overhang will be about 8′ wide on a 4:12 pitch in Michigan. It will also have a 2×6 fascia board and asphalt shingles. I told him he better install a lot of 2×6 bridging between the joists to reduce any deflection.
Any thoughts out there on this?

I doubt it would work with the snow loads you have up there.
With bigger rafters and engineered connections it should work. But 6' is awfully long.
Cantalevers usually have to have 2x the canted length on the opposite side, so that 6' cantilever would have to be 12' long inside the roof line.
I don't think a 2x6 is deep enough for that load though, not sure if there is a chart on it. I've got a 4' overhang on my garage roof edge - no snow load on a 3.25 pitch - and it can be springy to walk on. 6' with snow and ice sounds like a Darwin Award in the making.
Thanks for the input guys. I kinda have the same feeling about it, 6' is awfully long. Maybe he can shorten it up a few feet.
