Hello All.
While putting a bed together in a customers home there was damage done to a canvas ceiling. it was not torn through but was indented & scraped. The homeowner sent us an estimate for over $15,000.00. There must be a way to repair and not replace. We can not seem to find anyone who can do a repair. We were actually thinking of getting an artist so to speak to come and fill the scratch and paint it. Any other ideas or do you think the estimate is was exacerbated? Thanks for all your imput.
Ps. We notice what may be some previous damage next to the newer damage.

Bummer. You just got customer from hell. $15K? If that's accurate this canvas ceiling concept is nuts unless maybe it will cure ED or OCD or some sort of common insecurity.
I do not even know what a canvas ceiling is. Looks like something that could be fixed with spackle and a little artistry, but like I said I don't even know what a canvas ceiling is.
I'm looking forward to some more learned opinions about this now that I've shown my ignorance and feudal system ranking..
I sincerely wish you best of luck, too.
Canvass ceilings are very difficult to rip, unless they're old or poorly installed. Think in terms of wallpaper on steroids. However, they are not scratch proof. It seems this is what you have done as I don't see threads hanging out. Simple repair with some compound and texture and the aesthetic is maintained. Prime first, compound touch-up, prime again and then paint one coat. Then paint the whole ceiling to make sure the color is even throughout.

When they told you $15000 did you get a reach-around?
Frankie.Thank you for that info. it will help a lot. Honestly thanks. I appreciate it.
Oldhand. Now you have a bit more info if you ever run into this.
Mike. The estimate was from the customers company choice and we knew it was for a new ceiling and not repair. And yes we got a reach around lol
In a previous career I studied painting and prepared and used lots of canvas. I can't imagine there is anything in this situation that can't be repaired. I would have gladly accepted 15 K for any painting, and even thrown in a new unused canvas.
I don't know how you stand for insurance, or if an adjuster would make your customer see reality. Hope you had a contract that included some clause about arbitration. But
I would suggest finding a professional restorer with good credentials who can give you an estimate and at the same time satisfy the ego of your customer. That's where the real problem is.
