Prescriptive codes don't address the connection at less common angles, so base the connection off more typical ones using bolts, structural screws, blocking, and steel tension ties.

How old are you? What kind of education do you have so far? Do you have any carpentry experience?

al,i'm 34 and have recently started taking classes at my local voc. tech. school. in addition, i've been doing quite a bit of work around our 1910 victorian - replaced most windows, new walls, insulation, crown molding & paint in the dining room, scrape, prime & paint on the exterior, etc. i'd like to get on an actual residential job site on the weekend if possible so if anyone in the north of boston area is reading this and is looking for someone eager to learn please contact me.john
There's a person here about every 2 weeks asking the same thing you are. If you use the advanced search on "starting" or "on my own" you ought to find about 50 threads with a lot of good advice in them. The best advice would be to hang around here. You'll learn a great deal in these forums.

thanks for the advice boss. i'll keep searching & reading
