i don't know where you are moving to but there are loads of timber framed/brick veneered houses being built for housing associations in the south east of england.
most of there are prefabricated and just need nailing up on site.
i've seen a few in the various stages of construction and beleive me the quality is anything but fine!!
failing that there is a real shortage of constrution workers in the UK and if you can oitch a traditional roof you should do fine.

PS if you end up near me and i can help out feel free to ask. i'm in bucks
Thanks Kostello...I understood from another thread that you will soon be in the new world applying your trade, I hope the best for you and yours.Coincidently I will be in the south east of England as you still are now ,infact the wife and children are already set up in a rented house near to Orpington. My Lovely wife tells me your niebourhood is very desirerable, espesially compaired to our (at one time )state house in St.Pauls Cray.
I will be there threw January and I plan on doing more reserch of Jobsites.I would be glad to meet with you and trade off some ideas of our two different regions.I even may consider spending a month there this winter and frame up something. With my plan I dont expect to be leaving Canada permanently till late spring or early summer, you would be welcome to browse threw my ongoing work here if interested.
In your post you mentioned that quality isnt demanded to high standards,Pity (as the english might say) You may verywell find our Canadian homes are more demanding then and you will love the roof lines here around Toronto You may think every house is a copy to some taj mahall or windsor castle compaired to the majority of homes in the U.K. with their standard gable end roofs set at 6/12(45')pitch.
it may be some time before i get to croos the pond. SWMBO is now undecided again!!!
believe me High wycombe is not the most desirable place to live. my home is also an old council house.
from what there has been in the news lately they are planning to build 1000's of new homes in what they call the thames gateway which is basically everywhere to the east of london so St Mary Cray may not be such a bad place to be.
curiously enough i have been through there a couple of times when we used to visit my grandfather. i'm sure you know but its now been swallowed up by greater london.
if you haven't been there yet take a look at http://www.trada.co.uk
they are a consultantcy firm, they do have various vacancies but don't hold your breath. i was a bit slow this time last year and i went for an interview with them and near heard anything back.
i'm sure that they would be able to give you the names of large timber frame companies.
if you are going to be looking for work on smaller residential sites on additions etc.... i think you've just got to get your name out there.
at least you won't have to learn inches!!!!
