I’m finishing a basement and due to height restrictions, I’m contemplating laying underpad and carpet on the concrete. The concrete is smooth and dry but I’m wondering if I should paint the floor first to reduce dust. Is this the right way to go? Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

last basement remodel I was on...they laid the carpet right down. Home was about 6 years old...no moisture probs. The home owners picked a nice commercial carpet and up graded to the best pad option. It was a closed loop pile...but very comfortable.
Then again....I don't think painting would hurt any. But dust from where? In this case....the very few and minor cracks were feathered out and steel troweled...which made them nice and smooth.
Ask your carpet dealer. They'll know the best way to go. Jeff

Thanks Jeff. The dust is coming off the concrete floor. I will seal off the minor cracks and use a sealer as suggested by piffin. Thanks Guys!
just to be safe, place some plastic over the convrete, nice sized about 1-2ft x1-2 ft sq. tape it down and let it sit for a day or two. See if any moisture is under the plastic. If so seal it and try repeat the plastic.
that moisture if still there will create mold and mildew in carpets. you might have to look into a dehumidfier.
I hope that isnt the case but might as well see now then deal with mold problems later.
Hopefully a sealing job will do the trick, but people are right when they say no painting.
Thanks Bill, I'll do the test and if all is ok I'll seal it. THe house does have central air which takes care of the humidity in the summer months.
good tip for the simple moisture test. Jeff * Jeff J. Buck/ Buck Construction/ Pittsburgh, PA *

Paint can end up flaking off concrete. Easier and cheaper would be a concrete sealing product. They bind with the concrete.
