Re: cast iron radiators
Well, according to the internet (and an old college textbook), iron has a density of about 490 lb/cuft. So you could take that and multiply it by the overall dimensions of the thing, then guess as to how much iron is really there - maybe a third of the overall volume is metal? You don't mention the depth, but I'll guess 8", so: 5ft x 2.2ft x 0.66 ft x 33% x 490 lb/cuft = nearly 1200 pounds. Good luck!
cast iron
thanks for all the replies
I doubt the 1200 but if you use a cast iron tub as an example-440lbs.
Half again probably. 660.
Fudge factor----------------say 800 lbs but not more.
My guess from having dealt with those unruly things in the past............more than 4 and close to 6. They were or could be assembled on site when originally stuck there, which made it easier.
Sitting here typing, memories coming back, we'd put those things on a flat plywood cart with 100 lb casters and push them around. Heavy and awkward, but movable. If upstairs, going down-400, going up 800.
Really, not much more than a cast iron tub if that.
hmm, yeah, perhaps my 33% metal estimate is too high. i was picturing the radiators i have at home, forgetting that they are hollow. oops. maybe more like 15-20%, so 500-700lbs.
Calculating is a guess at best
but I have one of similar size that I just moved. My best estimate is 450lbs. I didn't weigh it but I will when it gets scapped next week.
