I have a dirt basement/crawl space area adjacent to finished rooms downstairs. The area had a broken vent window and has been used by cats for ….well… you know, and it just reeks. Just bought the place and want to clean up or seal in the smell. Spread plastic over the area, but want to know if anyone has other ideas to clean this out…spraying the dirt down, sealing it etc.. It’s too uneven to cover with any self-leveling product. thanks.

cheap vinegar is what I learnt here and it works a treat
a product called Natures Miracle at pet shops. This stuff is an enzyme that makes a chemical reaction.I would put it in a spray bottle.
I just a commercial for this on the discovery science channel, and thought of this post. http://www.urinegone.com great name.
lime ???
It's dirt, right?
Put on your throw away duds, get down on your knees and shovel out a few (or more) inches throughout. That should get rid of most of the offending smell and cause. Then you can go for the enzyme spray or whatever.
You could then follow up with some new clean sand/fill and poly over that.
Make the crawl inaccessible to pests.
Buy a couple of bottles of the enzyme stuff and spray the heck out of the area---maybe twice. The Nature's Miracle bottle I get will shoot spray 10 feet or more. Really good stuff!!!
