I’m installing a 5/8″ CDX roof tomorrow and am having trouble determining which face is the C face. One side has a ton of writing with several stamps. Is there a general rule to determine which side is the C face? I assume the C face should face the sky? Thanks for any help.

CDX can be installed with either side up, makes no difference and don't let anyone tell you it does.
Some inspectors like to see the grade stamps just to show that you are using the correct grade sheathing, I always put some sheets stamps down so they can be seen from under the roof.
printed side is the D side...
ditto on the which way is up and what some inspectors want...

If you are using ply on a roof make sure you do everything according to the rules........all gaps etc.
I once had a roof buckle (after home occupation) using 5 ply 1/2 cdx......at least 60% was bad.
Ply company sent their engineer half way across the country to inspect......he couldn't find anything wrong after measuring gaps, crawling in the attic, searching, searching......wouldn't talk to me...left and sent me a report from La.
Not our fault he says.....the home was built on a lake....excessive moisture in the air etc. etc.(then I knew why he wouldn't talk to me the #@$$#) ...
Fact is the stuff was no damn good and it buckled because of voids etc......had to strip, tear off, and replace the buckled up roof......
be careful.............
Smell them little flowers...play marbles with the kiddies...listen to them birdies....and don't forget to laugh at the pomposity of yourself.
Sounds like they admitted liability in their response.
Did you leave it at that? (attempting recovery)
When you tore it off did it show alot of voids and such?
I do copper roofing and the C side will not show foot prints when the skips and voids on the D face may telegraph thru.
Other than that it really is a wash.
The D side has more knots ( often missing) and just me walking on it can leave subtle tell tale tracks where the metal deforms.

CDX stands for C grade veneer on the good face, D grade veneer on the back face and X for exterior glue. The stamps are on the D face.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
