I have built an octagonal gazebo in my garden and am in the process of completing the cedar shingle roof. I was considering capping the eight “ridges” with copper, but have heard that cedar and copper don’t mix. Do the resins in cedar destroy the copper?

It's more of a concern with copper valley metal where the tannins will wash from shigle onto copper.
In your situation, the water wash runs from copper to cedar, no sweat.

Piffin, just curious. Have you ever seen a copper valley on a cedar roof fail before the cedar does?
I've seen some on tear-offs that were on the verge, but I always thought that hose ones were on their second set of shingles. The worst copper valleys I have seen were not on old cedar roofs but others, like asbestos shakes or composition shingles where the water carrying debris off the shingles for years had scoured the metal thin.
I like the idea of leaded copper for valleys and eaves but not so much because of the taniiic reaction that has been reported. It is because most exterior trimns here are painted white, and the copper wash stains it pretty bad.
This attachment shows a gazeebo I built with red cedar toppers. I wove laps on the hips and no caps. The ball cap finial is a custom copper mount

That's a nice looking gazebo, Piff. I like the lattice work.
I have seen copper valley flashing perforated by red Cedar wash off, and it had actually burned through the paint on the valley flashing, and left a shiney coppery spot. That's how I noticed it while searching for a leak.
Kewl- I like the look of woven hips and corners You don't see that around here much.

Pretty impressive detail in the arch and columns.....Did you make the lattice? Duh. Whatcha make it out of?
HAve any pictures of the underside of the roof?
Be well bro

I posted this thing here once before when it was a discussion about red cedar, I think. The whole durn thiong is red cedar except for the floor which is PT framing and Clear Fir VG 1x4 decking.
Yes, I made up the lattice on site over a bench with stips, gorilla glue and pin nails.
I probably have a view of the inside of roof somewhere on 35mm prints but darn me if I know where to look. I'll be working back there again later this winter so I can shoot a couple of digital pictures.
It is a unique thing because the little patio it resides in is too small for a full octagonal gazeebo and there is a stone wall immediately behind it with the arbor vitae. So the floor plan is six sided with a lyour like an octagon that got clipped off on the back so there is a longer flat wall there behind the bench seat, two side walls maybe 22" and then the three front walls. The lady who sits in it for tea with her friend can enjoy this view....

Views don't hurt either.
Aint yer crib, is it? Not that it matters......and by the way..what ever happened to that falling down property up the ways from you a piece?
After I finish this trip I may need to move to an island north a piece.
Did I scare ya?....lol
Be horrified......

You'll probably benefit from the copper ridge covers as the run off will kill the algae that reduces the life of cedar.
Man, I've got a question and there is already a thread started on the subject!
I'm building a gazebo too, and am also in the roofing phase. I've got a pile of "medium shakes", 24" long, and as I'm an amatuer, I don't know what the customary reveal or exposure is for this. What do you guys say? I suppose there is a range so it comes out even on the top edge.
Piffin, if you read this, nice work.
Thanks for your time.
