Cedar shingle fastening

AaronRosenthal | Posted in General Discussion on July 16, 2003 07:33am

Getting into the cedar siding on the customer’s house, with the LOTH (Lady of …) suggesting less noise would help nap time, I decided to use the 16 gauge finish nailer w/2″ nails rather than hand nailing.
Am I setting myself up for trouble? I’m nailing on the angle, and I CAN go back with the framer and 2″ nails, but I’m curious – surely you professional shinglers have sage advice.

Quality repairs for your home.

Thank you all for your reply.

After Mike Smith posted his reply, I went in the next day, put in 2" headed nails under the reveal of the already up siding, tore down that which was able to be removed, and nailed all the siding in the proper way.

The wall looks perfect, and I expect that after all the rot-removing work and the care we put in to the installation, the wall will be perfect for 30 years.

I'd rather see you using shingle nails to install the interior casings and sixteen penny nails to hang the drywall. Believe me, this is not one of your better ideas.

    Less noise would help naptime...

Suggest to her that you could take a nap as well... On her dime.

If you use the wrong nail, you can count on having to go back.

Does she want to pay you for extra time, so you can work around junior's naptime, or does she want to pay extra later when the job has to be redone ? (You will be paying then, as well....)

Or does she just want to get over it, cuddle junior for a few days, and let you do your job the right way ?

Yeeeesh ! Life happens. Deal with it. You want a job done, deal with the consequences.

I can say that with good conscience, because I am sure that you are already bending over backwards to be as accommidating as possible.

Bend over backwards for some people, and they expect you to break your back and fold...

A good heart embiggins even the smallest person.

A (not-so-funny) story about siding and nails.  We bought our home in the final stages of construction.  The cedar siding was already up, applied by, can you believe, 6 penny galvanized finish nails.  Seems the builder/GC didn't like the look of nail heads in siding.  I was just kind of suprised he hadn't set them all to boot.

I had to reside the south side after just a few years, the claps looked like the curl on a toboggin.  I've gotton pretty good at nailing in a SS ring-shank siding nail beside the finish nails, hiding the finish head under the siding nail.

    I never met a tool I didn't like!
