But what you need to do is install skipsheathing to lay it on.
I have a hard time imagining what you gain this way unless your areq charges an arm and a leg and a firstborn male child for dump tipping fees for the debris

this is a really bad idea.
cedar shingles are a premium product that need to be installed as such.
the only reason i could see anyone doing this is that they didn't know how to properly dry a roof in after shingle tear-off.

The cedar shingles need to "breathe" or dry out between rains.
You are going to spend around $250 per square on the cedar shingles and several times the labor vs asphalt shingles.
It would be bad idea to leave the current roof in place when youare making such an investment in your roof.
Google cedar breather. There is some type of mesh system that people install under cedar to help it breathe. I haven't seen it, not many cedar roofs around here.
