Hey guys, I’m in need of your wisdom. I went on a bid today to do some repair work on a restaurant that has 1×4 cedar siding on the building. The owner wants all the splitting and cracked siding replaced. He also wants any siding lifting at the but ends renailed. There was an addition put on back in the 80’s by another contractor who also did the siding. When they put the siding on they used staples.I have never seen this before and it really looks like crap. The origanal siding was nailed with what looks like casing nails.Anyways sorry for the babble. What would you recomend to install the new siding as well as refastening the lifting ends. The building is stained a natural cedar tone so I’m trying to avoid big silver nail heads sticking out.Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

When you try to renail ends that have warped up and away, the brittle cedar will split and break off nine times out of eight. Tell him he's wasting his money to try to repair what was a porr installation to start with. He got screwed. If he demands that you fix the screw up, he is trying to screw you. Use the opportunity to sell a whoile new siding job that you both can feel happy with or walk away from the job.
Commercial jobs are have extra nightmares built in re: fire codes, liability insurance, public awareness, OSHA magnets etc. so bid it high enough to be worthwhile.
