I have a customer who’s having moisture problems with his 1 x 6 cedar siding. The house is painted with latex acrylic paint and it’s bubbling badly. The side which is the worst was installed diagonally. I did a band-aid repair on one small piece and the sheathing behind was badly damaged. Other sides of the house have bad spots here and there but nothing like the one where it’s installed on the diagonal. One of the worst areas is an unheated garage so I don’t think it has anything to do with interior moisture. I was wondering if anyone ever heard that maybe this type of siding should not be installed diagonally. Thanks

If you don't get any replies here, you might try posting at Breaktime (three to the left of House Chat above). Lots of contractors and carpenters there. I don't have an answer.
We are just about to have cedar clapboard siding installed on our renovated cottage. Our architect specified installing it over a product called Homeslicker - a mesh which ensures that there is ventilation behind the siding. No amount of paint will keep out the water and it is important that the siding be able to dry out. He also specified that the boards be back primed before being installed. I have back primed the boards with a good quality acrylic exterior primer and finished the boards with a solid stain (all 6 sides are finished)
I had installed diagnol t&g cedar siding with 30# felt paper 20 years ago on my house without any problems. Repaint it every 7-9 years and looks like the day it was installed. Don't think it is the siding that is the trouble, has to be the condensation.
