Here is a pergola we just got done doing. This was a first for me. fairly simple design, but I did the gable because it measured 13′ x 18″ and it help break it up. Plus there is an outlet mounted high off the patio.
All western cedar – true 3×8’s and 6×6’s.
I had the Simpson post connectors and concealed joist hangers powder coated so the pergola has a bit of a timber frame feel. The trim coil for the ledger was also special ordered in black.
All fasteners were stainless steel.

I like it! Simple lines but very attractive.
Lookin' good - I like the gable. Might have to copy that!
Forrest
looks really cool.
Hey, You can't do that!
It's
DIFFERENT!
;)
I like it, but seems strange to see something substantial like that next to vinyl siding. How are the joists hung at the house?

I used a 2x8 ledger fastened with ss carriage bolts, and for the joists I used Simpsons HUC38 joist hangers. Because the cedar measured a true 3x8, I used the power planer to mortise each side and a chisel to mortise the small angle in each joist.
I prepainted the joist hanger nails black, but the gun stripped some of the paint off, but I did not have to touch them up.Dave Otto -- Otto Construction -- PA
Thanks, that is much more clear. The original photo looked like the edger was fastened right over the vinyl which made me flinch
