I’m using 1×6 T&G pine planks for the finished ceiling in a bedroom – should I place furring over the drywall to ensure a tight nailing??

That seems unnecessary if you use the right nails. Personally I’d try to blind nail it with 2-1/2” 15 ga nails. I’d also recommended one coat of mud in the joints of the drywall so it’s a fire rated assembly.
If you are planning on a stain or paint finish, do at least a first coat before install. Movement of the wood will tell you why if you don’t.
