I have some exterior porch ceilings to do. The finish is 1×4 e&cb painted cedar, and the max joist span is 94 inches.
Any reason 2×4 SPF on 24-inch centers won’t work?

I think I'd run a 1x4 tie up to the rafters at midspan if I were using 2x4's.
