I’m building a U-shaped outdoor kitchen (uncovered). Some might remember my earlier post asking for comments on building the structure out of concrete blocks vs. wood. I’ve finished framing the structure using PT plates and dougfir studs. I am going for a stucco finish on the 3′ tall walls.
As an alternative to achieving the stucco look by installing building paper, lath, and stucco coats, does anyone see any reason why I could not install 1/2″ cement board over paper and then stucco finish the cement board.
The only drawbacks I can think of would be the “outside corners” and the bottom edge would be lacking a neat finished look.
Appreciate your input.

Interestingly enough, they're installing Durock cement board on the exterior of the building next to me as we speak.

I've done what you're talking about with great results. Durock or Wonderboard has details on this method on their website. Good luck.

Not an issue at all- we used to build them taht way all the time in Vegas (though we used metal stud framing). Have your stucco sub embed mesh in the base coat to clean up and reinforce the corners, and then apply a finish coat with integral color in the texture of your choice. The system is just as durable as the traditional 3-coat stucco over lath.
