You guys have helped before, and I have another strange one …
My house is 40 years old with a family room on a cement slab. When they built the house they left a rectangular “hole” in the concrete floor that is 8″ wide, 8″ deep, and 12 feet long. There is concrete on the floor of the hole and it was formed properly with finished sides and bottom. In this hole is part of the baseboard hot water heat register. This is located in front of a pair of sliding glass doors leading to the exterior. I’m sure this was an early version of radiant floor heat. They installed a metal grate on top of this. It is double thickness and sturdy, but I would like to tile over the hole. My plan was to build up around the hot water radiator with a wooden box for the 12′ length. I will leave a few inches from the top of the wooded box to the floor height. I can then pour concrete in and level with the floor and proceed with tiling over the area. Ideas? Do you think the concrete will stay stable with wood under? Thanks is advance.

What about getting rid of the heater and adding some radiant tubing?
