A friend mentioned that the American Standard Champion toilets make a loud noise when flushed. Is it louder than other gravity feed toilets or just a different sound?

The noise might be described as a "clunk". I've got three of them in my house, BTW.
Toilets can make all sorts of sound during their cycle: The water flush action (where the water starts moving), the water evacuation action (which might be extra loud on a powered toilet), and the tank refill (that screaming sound on some toilets)
The "clunk" is actually a new noise not normally heard on other toilets. The ASC has a tower based water release mechanism, where other toilets have a rubber flapper mechanism. When you push the handle to activate the flush the tower is lifted verticly for a moment, completely opening a 3" hole for instant water flow. A very fast flow evacuates the bowl almost instantaniously - it's sucked away in less than a second... no lazy swirls around and around with this system! The neat thing about this system is that you also have a second full powered flush available instantly - no waiting for a full tank refill. The byproduct of this new system is an audible "clunk" when the tower drops back down to stop the water rush. I'm on a slab, and it doesn't seem to bad to me. Even on the toilet upstairs, the clunk isn't bad as it is only a deep momentary sound (as opposed to the high pitched water scream some toilets have).
I think people are unused to hearing that clunk, so it might be a little distracting compared to what they are used to. It's a different technology, and it sounds different, and that might take some getting used to. I don't think it is too loud, just different.

Great description - that's exactly how I'd describe mine. A clunk. Not really too loud. The first time I flushed one, I had to peer inside the tank and do it again to figure out why it made that noise.
Personally I don't care what it sounds like, as long as the contents of the bowl go for a ride. I'm really happy with the performance.
Yep, totally normal. I've also got 3 of them, and they sure do perform.
Hi PaulCP -
I read your post from last year while I was researching an answer to my own toilet noise. You mentiont the screaming sound some toilets make while they are filling back up. This is exactly what I am experiencing - it sounds like a jet turbine cranking up in my bathroom. Can you tell me what causes this...and more importantly, what I can do to fix it?
Thanks -

That screaming sound is caused by pressurized water vibrating parts inside the fill valve, I believe. Some of it can also be coming from the valve on the wall too, it depends on how high the pressure is inside the house.
Replacing the fill valve is very easy, and new ones are had from the hardware store for $7 to $20 I think.Rebuilding my home in Cypress, CA
