I have a rather ugly brick fireplace in my family room and would like ideas on how I could go about changing it to stone. I understand that there are artificial stone-like materials that can be applied over my existing hearth. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations?

Yes, there are artificial veneer materials that look very much like stone and they come in sections too so you just apply with a material similar to thin set, just like laying tiles. On the other hand if you like the real thing you have to dismantle the brick which is not too difficult to do. The only difficulty here is to put up the stone.
Thanks for the reply. I'm your basic homeowner and would more likely hire someone to do this rather than do it myself unless applying the veneer is real easy. Where might I find this stuff so I could see how feasible it might be for me to try and see if it looks good. How expensive would you figure it would be for the material or if I hired someone to do the job?
Last week friend of mine asked me the same thing, but he wanted to do the exterior of his house. I have no idea how much it would cost because I have never done it before. Your masonry supply store would usually carry stone veneer pieces but the sectional stuff is usually supplied by specialty companies. Somebody on the forum should be able to tell you a lot more.
The cultured is very nice these days and you can apply it over the old brick.(the guy at the stone store will give you the particulars). Around here (NE OH) you can figure about 10.00 sq. ' to apply a large area more for a smaller one. If it's a small area the stackable style looks better...........save the large stone for the large fireplace.
