Chaulking around trim

poppa47 | Posted in General Discussion on March 11, 2009 09:56am

I have a client that wants me to rechaulk the crown molding in the entire house. They say they have had it done before, it last about a year or two and then cracks again. Whats the best way to chaulk it to make it last?

Thanks

Yeah, the trim was shot by someone with a nailgun, and they need the chalk outline for the police report.

I chalked an outline of a body on the sidewalk in front of my house when the J.Witnesses were too prevalent. That, and a little bit of crime scene tape, they quit coming around.Chalk, chaulk, it's all good.Greg

You're working too hard. Answering the door dressed however they interupt you works well. Last time they rang the bell, DW and I were doing the nasty, as the kids like to call it. I'm not sure why they didn't come come in when the nude fat man with an erection invited them. How rude of them. http://www.quittintime.com/      View Image

A guy I used to work for said he looked out the window after he got out of the shower and saw some J. Witnesses coming down the street. He hears a knock at the front door and answers it buck naked. The JW's had gone across the street. The neighbor had knocked on the door. She didn't visit much after that.

Maybe she "sized" the situation up and decided not.

So, is 'chaulk' made in Britain and therefore classier? Makes a better outline around the dead trim? :)nice Galbraith quote, btwj

Don't use cheap painters caulk. Get something with stretch like Big Stretch caulk. Painters caulk gets hard and brittle. No silicone at all, even so called paintable caulk!

I like Polyurehane caulks for exterior applications. It can be pretty goopy if you're not careful though. Also Tightbond makes some good sealants now sold through Lowes I think it is a acrylic polymer that also can be messy but has a lot of stretch and won't dry out like painters or acrylic caulks.

If it's just a matter of seasonal movement and the gaps close in the summer, I would advise them to cut the caulk away cleanly, and don't re-caulk. It'll keep on failing and I think a clean gap looks better than a raggedy torn-up caulk line.

    1. DanH | Mar 12, 2009 04:09am | #10

Yeah, if it keeps failing it's either seasonal movement or a failure to properly prep the area before caulking.

Dynaflex 230 from Dap. But don't use the clear; it shrinks too much. Use the white (it's paintable). It stretches like nobody's business.
