Looking in to putting down wood floors in my townhome. I want to put down boards 5 inches in width and paint them with some durable paint. What kind of wood could I use without going broke? I was thinking southern yellow pine or dougfir. Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Jeremy Mercier

jer,
Paint it?
I wouldn't.
Didn't you ever have to paint your grandmothers porch every freakin' summer when you were a kid?
SYPine makes a real nice floor. But you have to get it tongue and grooved for flooring. Big cost.
Real wood floors ain't cheap.
You want cheap?
Go to the Orange Box and check out the flooring there.
That's about as cheap as it comes.
Ed.
*syp , t&g.... premium grade...you can go down a grade to save money... but a real wood floor will not come much cheaper than syp..not a bad price , either.. compared to fir or oak
*I've done several face nailed (cut nails) SYP shiplapped floors - price is quite reasonable and looks good out here in the country - might be too rustic for a townhouse -
*Flat sawn SYPine will have broad, very hard, late growth rings. I can't imagine it holding paint worth anything.jim l
*Y'all got a planer? If so, the 5" wide, 4 ft long boards off the face of oak pallets are about 60% usable - I've used those successfully for everything from decking, wall paneling, and furniture. Don't even have to cut the T&G if you don't mind slight gaps. Like Ed said, forget the paint.
*You can get SYP in several widths and grades, and it holds paint well in low-traffic areas like bedrooms. Don't know about high-traffic areas. Floor enamel is the stuff you want. SYP does move quite a bit, at 5" expect gaps between boards in the winter.
*I think syp is the way to go after some thought, I will just tongue and groove it myself. No paint sounds wise as well. Thanks for the input!
*Both syp and fir have a lot of resin so they don't hold paint very well. expect it to chip off. Designers do use paint for some floors but it is for effect, not cheepness or quality. if you want wide boards, paintable and cheap, I would use white pine.
