My flooring guy needs to come back, and so does my stone sub. We’ve a fireplace hearth “apron” to do, flush to the floor, thermalled granite laid in mortar on the recessed concrete base. Oak flooring with a pictureframe edge comes right up to the stone.
Who goes first, the stone guy or the flooring guy? The flooring is down, laid in close to the hearth opening, needs to be precision-cut and trimmed with the edging.
That flush joint between edging and hearth, is it a tooled mortar joint?
Haven’t done one of these, before, thus the question. I want to be prepared for these guys and their stories.

I would mask off the flooring real well..esp. if red oak, mortar is hell on raw oak..and tool mortar like ya said..so, floor edge first. The mason CAN put a temp strip to work to, then pull it up for floor strip but, ya may damage the mortar pulling it up.
Stetch wax paper or Saran wrap to the temp strip. That'll help save the motor joint.

Yep. I think he also needs to caulk abit tween the mortar and wood..no? for wood movement.
Flat backer rod to be removed for the control joint make up. (caulking)

You got it. I hope he reads it now..lol
Oversized temp strip made up of two thin strips on top of each other. Pull the bottom one. Lower the top one away from the mortor and there's space to work and a void for the control joint.

I think it's really important to ask both of them and then coordinate between them
Here's how it would work here.
The floor would be in and finished first, Then masked and protected. The mason would make up a template as they do for granite countertops. He would make up the granite to fit with that template.
To install - have you seen the heavy plastic banding straps for materials deliveries? You can make up handles on them to be able to hold and run a couple under the granit for lowering it prefectly into place.
But I'm sure everybody has their way.
Excellence is its own reward!
