   I am having a custom home built starting this spring. I like the work my builder does but like other builders in this area they all are putting "tin" cans on top of their chimneys(actually they are stainless steel caps).

   I can't believe people are spending half a million dollars on a custom built house and letting these guys put cheap looking caps on the tops of the chimneys.

   Does anyone know where I can find more aesthetically pleasing caps. I saw some nice copper or bronze colored chimney caps on some homes and condos in a ski resort town.

   I want to have a nice stone chimney and finish it off nicely, not with some old tin cans.

   Jeff, I install a lot of chimney caps that I buy from my local masonry supply yard. I believe they are made by Draft King and are a flat black color that I think looks pretty good.(of course our tastes may not be the same) The caps are sized to fit on each different sized flue and are not a one size fits all kind of thing.In my area there are also shops(pretty small) that specialize in custom decorative architectural metal work.Kind of like a sheet metal version of a custom millwork shop. Anyway,why not look into this in your area?Remember this item will actually be a work of art and will cost accordingly.You seem to looking at this item as the crowning glory of your house so why not do it right.The cost of the cap spread out over the next 30-40 years you will live in the house will be nominal,and it will give you pleasure every time you see it (where the cheap one will just irritate you every time you see it) Spend it ,its only money!
