This question is for the code enthusiasts.
My chimney chase runs through my dining room. Right now I am framed with half steel half wood with a 2 inch clearance all around. I want to make the chase as small as possible being that it is a small DR to begin with. One inspector told me I need to have a sealed envelope around the chim to keep gases out of the house. another inspector once told me I have to have fire stops between floors. which is it? trap gas or let it escape?
Further, I would like to remove all the framing around the chim and apply cultured stone. do I have to erect a frame with concrete backer board to give me clearance once again or can I go right over the block?
BTW, concrete block chimney with clay flues, 2 story dwelling 6 years old.

You do need firestops between floors. If you quoted the other inspector correctly, he is a victim of his own ignorance. It is only if you have the chimney enclosed, that you need to maintain a 2" space to combustables. And that is for a solid fuel flue. I suspoect this is for the oil or gas burner, which as lower requirements, probably already met by the inch or so betweeen the clay flue and the block lifts.
Go ahead and rock it up for decoration.

Thanks, thats what I thought. the one inspector told me I needed to maintain a continuos envelope through the living space so gases could escape at the attic. that wouldnt work very well with firestops.
The only thing flowing freeely around that guy is the BS
