I had done a previous post about repairing my chimney’s crown. There is some damage to the concrete that is against the ceramic flue. If the concrete chips are removed it seems like an open channel between the flue and concrete. What is supposed to be there to keep the concrete from falling in? I’ve seen articles where metal or cement board is used for this purpose. If that has eroded what should be used to support the new cement?

Chicken wire works fine. Mix the mortar pretty stiff.
