I need to redo the top of my chimney as the mortar is cracked and has been causing a little bit of leakage. I have caulked the cracks but it is now time to bit the bullet and do a total redo.
What material is recommended? Just mortar? Mortar with and additive?
Thanks

or a metal cap of copper or lead

You could build it out with wood and pour a concrete cap like the one these guys just did.
They're also stuccoing it to match the house.

Formed concrete is your best option. Mortar will crack again at some pint. Or as was mentioned, a metal cap keeps rain off of the top of the chimney as well as out of the flues and does double duty on varmints.

I disagree, conc/mortar are maintenance pigs, get a metal pan made, caulk it, done ..

concrete caps always crack, its a ()*&() lot easier to recaulk than smash off a conc cap and repour it .. metal pans are superior to concrete caps
I guess your a Vinyl siding fan too.

I can show you several concrete caps from five to fifty years old with no cracks.Methinks you see ones poured by guys who don't know how to mix a good drypack mud. That is just as bad as hacks who would just caulk a metal seam instead of soldering it in a situation like this.Point being, if you are doing a concrete cap, do it right. If you are doing a metal cap, do it right.
because failing to make it right the first time means you get to do it again
