Chimney meets Valley – roofing dilemma
Hi,
I’m replacing my roof. I have most of the old shingles removed. In the photo included, you can see where a Chimney meets a valley. This valley leaked, and I feel like I should replace the flashing… but it runs under the chimney. I think they stuccoed over the flashing. I’m reluctant to tear into the stucco. Curious if anyone has thoughts about how to proceed with this? Any easy ways out? Thanks in advance!

Seems like the step flashing should be under the valley flashing in this application…otherwise, water can run off the valley pan directly under the step flashing.
Josh! Thank you so much. Appreciate the insight. I'm really a novice at this.
You may consider a liquid applied flashing and reinforcing mesh over the metal flashing to eliminate any seams where water can penetrate. Just a thought.
The step flashing under the left side of the chimney doesn't extend down far enough and is too narrow, the valley flashing is much too narrow. The valley flashing should be twice that wide at least
Thank you Florida! I'm grateful for your thoughts on this.
Cut back the stucco and do it properly. You will barely notice the patch from ground level. You will definitley notice the leaks if you dont do it correctly
