Chimney pipe surround and conversion
I have a 7/12 pitch metal roof with a double wall chimney pipe from the wood burning fireplace coming through that has been working fine for 14 years with no issues. We are thinking of converting it over to a propane insert. The pipe exposed above the roof is of course very tall (2′ above anything within 10′ IRC1003.9) and has always been quite unsightly. My wife has harassed me for years to box the exposed pipe and cover in stone (faux or real). Perhaps steel wrap would be a possibility as well.
1. I am looking for an article on the correct way to do this. Clearly, I don’t want a lot of weight if possible.
2. Upon switching from wood to gas (LP) do I understand IRC G2427.6.4 (503.6.5) correctly that the bottom of the discharge cap now only has to be 1’3″ above the upslope side of the roof? That would be very popular with my boss.
