Had a chimney cleaned. Chimney guy said you have a problem w. the way the masons placed the mortar. Fireplace is not safe to burn wood. Cost 500-600 to repair using a product called Chamber Tech. Said it would take about 1 hr to fix. Any thoughts or experience?

Sounds like snake oil.
I'll try googling up that item, but I can't imagine how mason's could have put the mud in the wrong place to make a chimney unsafe.

Typical "chimney cleaned for $19.95" scam. A sweep tried to sell me $1,200. of repairs, some of them legit. Now I clean it myself, but I'd rather pay a fair fee for a cleaning than to pay $20. and have them try to make $ on "repairs".
And $500. - $600. for a repair that takes 1-hour?

Scammed Scammer Scammed. Even if there was a hole, a chimney will draw smoke in and up, not blow out into an attic.

It is something good to use as a parge for throat smoothing if needed.but there is nothing in the description here that makes me thing it is needed in any way. The worst thing that can accrue from a rough throat is slightly more creosote build up.But an open fireplace doesn't typically make creosote anyways and when it does, it is in the tip top of the flue and not in the throat

here is what they said on the invoice: there are gaps and the flue tiles are exposed.
