Choice between Makita LXPH05Z and Makita LXPH03Z hammer drill
I have two batteries and charger for a Mikita drill. I am needing a hammer-drill and was looking at the Makita LXPH05Z and the Makita LXPH03Z. Which one would you recommend? The LXPH05Z is brushless but does not have the RPM or torque the LXPH03Z has. The description says the LXPH05Z batteries will last longer because of being brushless. Both are about $100
Product Features LPXH03Z
- Makita-built 4-pole motor delivers an industry-leading 750 -Inch Pound of Max Torque, 25-Percent more than the previous model
- Mechanical 2-speed transmission (0-400 & 0-2,000 RPM) covers a wide range of drilling, fastening and hammer drilling applications
- Compact design at only 8-7/8″ long and weighs only 5.1 lbs. for reduced operator fatigue
- Shift-Lock Drive System quickly shifts between hammer drilling and driving modes
Product Features LXPH05Z
- Efficient BL Brushless motor is electronically controlled to optimize battery energy use for up to 50-Percent longer run time per charge
- The BL Brushless Motor eliminates carbon brushes, enabling the BL Motor to run cooler and more efficiently for longer life
- The electronically-controlled BL Brushless Motor efficiently uses energy to match torque and RPM to the changing demands of the application
- Variable 2-speed (0-400 and 0-1,500 RPM) covers a wide range of drilling and driving applications
- BL Brushless Motor delivers 400-Inch Pound of MatimesTorque
- Weight 3.8 lbs

If you intend to drill concrete, forget either, get a spline drive or sds max bulldog.
Concrete for Makita
I want be using it for large concrete bores. Presently I need to sister or scab 2x6 together to lower floor for no curb shower and repair joist near exterior doors.
large concrete bores
Go with a bosch bulldog or even a HF sds rotary hammer (if just for this one job).
When I was young and poor, I drilled 1/2" holes in concrete with just a 1/2" drill. Then I used a hammer drill.
Once you drill concrete with a good rotary hammer, you will never use a hammer drill again.
Say a 6" deep 1/2" hole in concrete:
1/2" rotary, about 1/2 hours if you can sit on the drill, took me 1-1/2 HOURS in 1965 to drill a 1/2" hole thru a 12" wall with one.
hammer drill - what, 5-10 minutes?
Bosch bulldog or equivalent, 20 seconds!
I think he meant to say "I
I think he meant to say "I won't be using it for large concrete bores."
