I’ve got several different quotes from roofing contractors to do a full tear-off and roof replacement including new decking on my hundred-year old house. The current roof has at least one layer of old composition shingles and under that a layer of cedar shakes over spaced solid-wood decking. The old decking is 1″x4″ with 2-1/2″ spaces between boards. New decking will be required to create a solid surface, which I assume will be applied over the existing spaced decking. One contractor specified 1/2″ DX decking, while another recommended 1/4″ DX, or alternatively (for less money) 1/4″ shipboard. Two questions: Is 1/4″ too skimpy under these circumstances? What is the advantage (if any) of DX over shipboard?

Shipboard or chipboard (AKA OSB)?
*3/8" is the minimum required by the manufacturers. I prefer 1/2" plywood myself, but sob is also acceptable.
*go with the 1/2 the 1/4 will not have enough nail holding ability...it'll be plenty strong enough as support..but any nails between the skipped-sheathing will only have 1/4 of holding power....if it were not skip-sheathed.. say just a bad baord roof.. maybe the 1/4 inch..our standard is 1/2 inch for overlays...b but hey, whadda i no

Just a clarification to my original query: the alternative to CDX was waferboard.

Brent,
Three years ago I re shingled my 105 year old NE colonial. I did a complete tear off of both composite and wood shingles. I used 1/2 DX ply very successfully and the deck is very strong. Just make sure the roof trusses are in good shape.
