We’re about to begin a major interior facelift in a 50s rambler: carpet, kitchen floor & counters, paint all rooms (with color!). My question , however, centers on carpet. Does anyone have any advise on types of carpet and padding? We have no children, but one large dog (with unlimited access to yard). Easy cleanability is a requirement. We’ll be carpeting livingroom, hall and bedroom. We’ve looked at pile, friese (sp?!) and berber and have received mixed messages on all. Any input would be gladly heard!

the type of padding to use would depend on what type of floor you have below. If you are putting carpet on top of concrete you would want more padding than if you were putting it on top of hardwood floors.
I chose a berber carpet that is made with some type of DuPont fibers so that it would clean easily. I also chose a type of berber that was woven so that if there was a snag, it wouldn't pull the whole thread out. That is the worst flaw with berber. I chose a medium to high traffic type of carpet and it is looking beautiful but it has only been installed for about four months now. Be sure to save all the remnant pieces for drop cloths and heavy duty foot mats for bad weather. It is especially nice since they match so they don't look offensive. It would be a great idea to have a large piece with the edges seamed nicely for the areas where your dog likes to sleep or other high traffic spots.
The style of carpet is of course a personal issue, but I would try to go with as neutral ####style as possible. I would avoid frisse myself as it looks awfully trendy. Your carpet is not anything that you are going to want to change often. We chose a berber that is one color but the texture is in the very subtle diamond pattern. I would recommend this.
Good luck on your facelift. We are seven months into ours with a 60s ranch. Its been fun and a whole lot of work.
Hi Annie,
Dog + Berber = Big Mistake, been there, done that.
Trendy carpets = Shaggy + Dog = Bigger Mistake
I also go with Top of the line pad + Med line carpet=Safe Bet.

Now, I really just want solid flooring with rugs that are an ease to clean. (Parrot pet friendly)

Thanks FF! We've received such mixed advise on berber: either it was fabulous or awful. We've decided a pile might be a safer route as we'll always have pets. From the research we've been doing, the pad seems to be of particular importance, so we'll go for a good one.
Mer: Your 100% correct on the padding. The research points in that direction too and neutral is the name of the game. What we're hoping to do (recommended by many to us) is choose the carpet, paint the room (using old carpet as drop cloth) and then lay new. Hope those colors really match!
Good. A really good pad, make a less better carpet feel...plush, and lets face it, that carpet aint gonna be around very long anyway."Whiskey for my men, and beer for my horses"Willy Nelson and Toby Keith
