Hey flooring experts- What are your favorites? We just got a sample of this stuff called siberian larch. It looks pretty nice, with a clear urethane pre-finish its blonde, maybe a little darker than maple, very tight grain, the back is kerfed, and we can get it in 4 in.x 7 ft. lengths for about $6 sq. ft. Anybody used it or know about it? Does it darken with age?it seems like pretty durable stuff. What we really wanted was a good durable grade of pine-clear with vertical grain. We found some nice looking stuff in NEW growth but have been told it is too soft. In the past we’ve just used BRUCE natural prefinished (from you know where) Just looking for ideas on a good, light colored, natural looking, not too expensive floor. What are your favorites? thanks!

When in Oz I was using Oak parquet block and T & G board from Lithuania or Latvia and the importer also offered me the Larch. I had no use for it at the time but I know it was used by several contractors with good results. Larch is normally quite soft, but apparently this stuff is slow-growing and a lot denser.
For a light colored but hard timber I used this, Southern Blue Gum, which is straw color and about as hard as oak. It comes from Oz and also Portugal.
*Charles,You might want to take a look at http://WWW.FiguredHardwoods.com . I'm purchasing Flame Birch from them for my new home under construction. I've been to their show room/facility and they are VERY professional and helpful. The warehouse was spotless and their woods are unbelievable. Just my two cents.-Fred
*Have you considerd Maple?Siberian woods are very slow growing so the growth rings are closer which nakes for a denser, better wearing wood.
