I almost hit 2 deer on the Whitehurst freeway in downtown Washington DC. They do seem pretty adaptable.
Buck see doe. You've got a sharp eye. She's pretty well camoed in that background. What are those blooms? I don't recognize them right off.
How can you tell from that pic. that the deer is a doe?
cause there was a ray, a drop of golden sun?

See the little deer, does the deer have any doe?, yeah two bucks? What no stooge fans out there .Somebody had to say it.
was thining it and already found http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okZrssQvLWY
it's around 1:50.
Yup, a few years ago I was bucking up logs for firewood. Screamin' saw, logs and equipment flung everywhere; then I noticed something to my right... ten feet away a deer calmly walked by. Almost scared me by it's presence. We stared at each other for a while, then it comfortably walked away and I got back to work bucking logs...they're funny animals.

DEER!!!! In the urban areas, they are hooved rats!!!!
I live in the Chicago area, across the busy street from the Forest Preserve (http://www.fpdcc.com) where the deer have become overpopulated. I have had them in my back yard, have had them scare me as I am walking, and even had one with a broken leg take up R&R under my window one winter, using our lilac as Old Country Buffet. Our cat was fascinated, as we have low windows, and the deer was right next to the bottom window, and the two could eye each other.
But, oh my, they still are beautiful. The ones in my back yard ran as I left the house; leaping over the fence is unbelieveably graceful.
Still, something has to be done about controlling the population. You can't hunt them; you can't catch them; but you can certainly let them starve during a bad winter. But the Bambi-lovers don't see the starving deer so they feel all right about that.
There's deer birth control in the works. Fear not. My cat was out in my field walking around with a few deer one evening. I was concerned they would hurt him - he's blond and named "Custer", after all - but he'd walk a few feet, they'd follow, then Custer would walk back through them and they'd turn around and follow him the other direction. They got too close to the lane so i called Custer to come back to the house, which startled the deer, who hadn't even noticed me bec they were so entranced by the cat.
"There's deer birth control in the works."
Care to elaborate? That's the first I've heard of it.
True art is characterized by an irresistible urge in the creative artist. [Albert Einstein]
It's a vaccine to prevent deer from conceiving. So far, the way to administer it is with a dart, which is spendy, and it doesn't last long enough. Still, it's improving, the price will drop, and it offers a non-lethal was of reducing urban deer populations. Audubon has a fair-minded look at the pros and cons to date:

That article was posted in '02. I've used it often bec of the source being unbiased and that it's a fair assessment of the problems associated with population control of prey species, especially non-lethal control. Here's a bit more up-to-date article. Looks more promising with a one-time dosage for female deer. I got a kick out of the comments, including the guy fearing that deer contraception contributes to metrosexual human males, and another double-posting his comment about being smerter than the fellow who posted before. The amount of grass they process is amazing. Canadian poopers for sure. From feeding the nearby swans, I've got a handfull of poopers that will walk right up to me. I've joked with a couple co-workers that if I wanted roast goose, I just have to reach out and grab one. jt8

With times being a bit tougher I am surprised there isn't really a little more urban hunting going on. God knows gunshots are not that rare in your average US city.
I guess city folks don't recognize "meat" if it isn't in a plastic tray with shrink wrap on top.
About one block from where the cougar incident happened I posted the story about is a greenway .
Big white buck lived there for years , everybody knew he was there, used to watch for him at the edges of the Greenway. Couple of years ago some "Trophy Hunter" shot him (spotlighted in the middle of the night) , took the head and cape, left the rest.

yeah ... but they're more fun to see than the regular old city rats.
there's something that's gone from growing up ... "rat hunting" ...
I'd go down to the river with my older brother ... he'd bring his 22.
we'd walk along plinking rats ... the cops would show up ... make sure you were just shooting rats and not at windows or railroad box cars and tell ya to be safe!

Wasn't that something, when we were kids we could walk around with guns and no one cared, The cops would say, just be careful. Now days HOLY ####!!! call in the military.
We were just talking about that the other day.
BTW, really nice pictures, that first one had me going, had a hard time seeing her. No one should regard themselve as "God's gift to man." But rather a mere man whos gifts are from God.
So true. When I was in high school I'll bet at any time of year at the least 50% of the cars or pickups in the parking lot had firearms in them. It was pretty common to go to hunting either before school or after.Or both. Yet we had no school shootings(course you knew you wouldnt have lasted long if you'ld tried) a few years ago a kid got expelled (an honor student) because he told someone he had a shotgun locked in his trunk .He had been duck hunting that morning and hadn't time to take it home wiyhout being late for class.
I grew up further out. We could plink all day long and not have cops show up. The only exception was if you wandered over to the state park (nature preserve). Over there you might draw a park ranger or conservation cop.jt8

John,
We would go to the city dump about a mile out of town and stand where trucks dumped down the hill and shoot rats. Small town of 4,000 good folks.Great sport. No one ever said a thing since we were killing lots of rats.Pete

Even tho we live out in the country I'd rarely seen deer in our yard until last spring, when there were 5 out grazing near a large stand of pine trees. I wanted to see how close I could get, and I did get unbelievably close to the bravest of the group.
She was standing there in that knock-kneed, one ear up -one ear sideways stance they do sometimes. I was thinking how goofy and ungainly she looked standing there in the driveway when she and the rest suddenly turned and bounded into the empty lot next door.
I understood the term "liquid movement" at that moment.
A few years ago, I was building a deck for a customer not too far away.
One day, I heard all this racket in the woods. I thought it might have been a pack of squirrels, but it really was a bunch of turkeys walking about 20 feet away from me. They weren't at all disturbed by my saw or nail guns.
I saw them about the same time every day. Boy, those birds are ugly. I'm glad they taste better than they look.
I live in a city neighborhood ... very urban.
stones throw ... down the hill ... across the river and into downtown.
There's a huge flock of turkey that live in a greenway between my house and the parkway on ramp. Coupla deer in there too ... and the occasional fox. Every now and then we get a small black bear that followed the river into town from the hills/mountains outside the city.

Crack ain't big here, now meth on the other hand I can walk around the corner (any corner ) and get.
But your right this ain't no big city like the burg.

They call cougars "Florida panthers' here and they are federally protected as endangered species. They can stop building projects and reroute roads if someone sees one.
Just to demonstrate the insanity, when someone suggested they didn't have enough genetic diversity the government imported Texas cougars to breed with them ... but they are still supposed to be "Florida" panthers. It reminds me of the story of George Washington's hatchet.
It has a new head and the handle has been replaced a few times but it is the same hatchet he cut the cherry tree down with.
Maybe he was looking for your goat?

"and the occasional fox. Every now and then we get a small black bear that followed the river into town from the hills/mountains outside the city."
You have better peepers than me. Never saw a fox that close to town. (I've had to swerve there to avoid putting a turkey through the windshield more than once tho'.) Never saw a bear in town either, tho' it doesn't surprise me. Word is that there's cyotes moving in too. Never saw one here, tho'.
A couple of years ago, there was a doe living in the woods near my house where I walk the dog around 5 a.m. every day. She'd occasionally join up with us and walk a ways, 3 or 4 feet from us. Dog didn't bother her, she didn't bother the dog (just another big brown dog to him, I guess), so we all got along. Pretty cool way to start the day.Mike HennessyPittsburgh, PAEverything fits, until you put glue on it.
haven't seen any this year so far, but I usually get a glimps of a fox running thru the greenway that winds around next to Sycamore ... the steep twisty backroad off Mt Washington ... goes under McCardle Roadway.
We used to go rat hunting down by Skeetersville ... aka Duck Hollow.
On the Mon, bear the Homestead Highlevel Bridge ... if U eat outside at EatNPark in the Waterworks ... you look directly across the river to it. Bet that development killed all the fun at Skeetersville. Used to shoot rats, drink beer with the bums and sit around big bonfires in the big gravel parking lot there.
The actual "town" of Skeetersville / Duck Hollow was on the other side of the little bridge there. 2 streets ... maybe 8 houses or so. All next to 9 Mile Run.

I'd guess that I'm not alone in wondering about sequence of events suggested by the name. Maybe it's like one of my local favorite eateries, Buca di Beppo. The name is peculiar enough to make it stick in the memory. Except at Buca di Beppo, I look for Dice Clay at the bar, cracking wise wid da guys.

Eat 'n Park -- name always seemed kinda backwards to me. It started locally years ago as one of those car-hop drive-in restaurants. I spent many an evening in high school oogling the waitresses, and enjoying my "Brauny Lad" rib eye steak sammich, with a big 'ol slice of red onion and "special sauce". They were also the home of the "Big Boy" burger -- kinda like a pre-McDonald's Big Mac, but more real.
It's a very popular chain. Well run, inexpensive, clean, dependable. Not gormet, but decent.
My kid worked a while at one of their shops earning $$$ for college and did pretty well. They were always very good to her -- treated her well, and always let her pick up a few shifts when she was home on break.Mike HennessyPittsburgh, PAEverything fits, until you put glue on it.
I got curious and looked Eat'n Park up on the net last night. As you said, no matter how they decided on the name, it sure has become a successful chain.
BTW, the "Big Boy" burger originated at Bob's Big Boy in SoCal, also a very popular chain, beginning back in the late forties. There's still a couple of them around, although without the car hop service. I believe that they have a copywrite on the name so maybe Eat'n Park is derived from Bob's. There used to be another Big Boy chain, Elias Brother's Big Boy I believe it was called, in and around Detroit.
Another BTW, the oldest Bob's is in Toluca Lake, near NBC, Warner Bros, Universal City and Disney studios. They still have "car night" every Friday. Lots of excellent custom and classic cars show up, just as they have for more than fifty years.
I attended that event a couple weeks ago with my neighbor who owns a '65 Mustang, in original condition. I've heard that Jay Leno sometimes cruises though in one of his cars on Friday nights, after taping the Tonight Show at NBC in Burbank, just two-three miles away. Heard it but never seen him there. But then I'm not a regular.

I figured it was some licensed product, since I've seen 'em in other restaurants -- Elby's for one.
When I was a kid, they used to pass out Big Boy comix and crayons.

That's Big Boy alright! Part of the trademark package. As you said, the BB was the original double-deck burger. Their thousand island dressing was a first on burgers too.
Back when ground beef had real flavor, before feed lots and growth hormones, they were really juicy and delicious. The shakes were excellent also.
Edit: I remember the comix too. Good marketing idea for families with kids. Keep 'em busy while they wait for their food.

Swissvale to Greentree as a kid was like going across state.
every winter we'd take a mini-vacation ... stay at a hotel in Greentree that had an indoor pool. That ride seemed to take hours. Always want to remember to ask my Dad if it just seemed that way ... or he really did drive around for hours to confuse us!

Manners Big Boy in the Cleveland area. Don't know if they are still around as I no longer live there but they were there in the 60's.

Saw a red fox on the RR tracks across from Station Square. If you know where Bruont's Isle is, located within city limits, there are at any given time a herd of 26 deer living there. Which includes a beautiful 12 point. Have seen a few dead beaver oas road kill just outside of Pittsburgh. Regards!
