A Hardi crew fell in love with Hitachi’s carbide tipped jigsaw blades (I gotta admit they are pretty awesome blades), and as a result used my beloved Bosch 1591 extensively. I’m concerned that it’s chock full of FC dust now, which can’t be good. Anyone ever torn one of these units apart for cleaning? Any gotchas that I should be worried about?
Thanks,
Scott.

Sell it to the hardie crew for the cost of a new one.

Hahaha....no they were working on MY house after all....Scott.
So they borrowed you jigsaw when you were the customer? All the more reason to sell it to them."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

First, if a tool is so beloved, don't subject it to Hardi service. :o)If it were me, I would be blowing it out with air combined with tapping the housing/tool itself to loosen/dislodge the dust. They didn't use it in the rain, did they?
No, no rain. I plan to open it up, clean it with solvent, and repack with synthetic grease. I just want to know if something is going to go SPROING when I crack it open, never to be reassembled again.I don't think it will, Bosch tools are usually predictable, but you never know....Scott.
you want to open the motor, gear case or something else???

Guys.... I appreciate the encouragement for "going after them" for a new saw, but honestly I offered it to them. I just didn't think it would get used to the extent that it did. No biggie though, it's just one job. The saw still works as it did, I just want to mitigate any ongoing damage.>>>IMERC>>>you want to open the motor, gear case or something else???I'm thinking the front gear case is where most of the grit it. I'd like to open it up, rinse all the grit (and lube) out, and repack with fresh lube. Have you done this? Thanks,Scott.
very strongly doubt that anything got into the gear cases...

I run a lot of electric power tools around stone dust. I have never had dust get into gearboxes. The place that it causes trouble is in the plastic switches. They start binding and stop sliding smoothly. My trigger locks seldom work for long. All I (and most stone fabricators) do is blow the tool out with compressed air while the motor is running. On a jigsaw I suppose you would want to clean the rod that runs up and down (holding the blade) into the housing. Why not look up an exploded diagram of the saw on a toolparts website and see if there is any potential for dust to end up in a critically lubricated area.Karl
OK. Maybe I (and others) are over reacting to the effects of FC dust, now I'm sounding like a "tool polisher" LOL...from another thread...I'll go ahead and open it up and report back with what I find.Scott.

Great website for parts lists and parts drawings for a variety of tools here. Also a great parts supplier. Found an unobtanium but critical spring for a 25 year old Elu SCMS and had it in my hands in ten days from England.Bosch jigsaws:http://www.powertoolspares.com/Bosch-professional-spare-parts-1/6000549/bosch-jigsaws/6000610/

They don't list Porter Cable. I have my grandfathers old PC jigsaw, the one with the fixed base and funny blade shank. The brass worm gear finally stripped. Sure would like to find a new part."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

I went down to the lobby
To make a small call out.
A pretty dancing girl was there,
And she began to shout,
"Go on back to see the gypsy.
He can move you from the rear,
Drive you from your fear,
Bring you through the mirror.
He did it in Las Vegas,
And he can do it here."
Hey I found a source. toolpartsdirect.com Problem is they list 4 versions of my saw, now I need to figure out which one I have. The gear is about $40. "Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

It was still available 5-6 years ago in an updated version. Nice saw when it worked, very smooth."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

Don't worry about it, i have a bosch that has seen twenty houses or so and still not a thing wrong with it. There is minimal dust with a jigsaw.
Blow it out with your air gun. I cut Hardi with mine all the time and never had a problem but I do blow it out every time.
