I have a 35′ x 31′ wide 6 stall horse barn where the stall walls support the roof. The peak is 14 feet the dirt floor. I want to clear the stall, pour a floor and make it a shop.
The question is I have 2 choices. Put a large gluelam beam in with steel pillars to support the ridge. Or next spring, rip off the roof and get some trusses to span the 31 feet and reroof. I am not real keen on the steel pillars down the center of the shop.
I don’t have any idea on cost for the gluelam project. The Trusses are $2200 alone.
Any comments on the project?

Perhaps a little more information. Are the exterior walls stud framed on a cement or block stemwall or is this a pole barn? Also 31' seems like an odd width for a barn, are you measuring from outside of bottom plate to outside of bottom plate if it's stick framed or outside of the posts themselves at the bottom if its a pole barn? The top plates could have spread a foot if it's an old barn? I'm kind of visualizing a 10' center isle with 3 box stalls, 10x11 or 10x12, on each long wall with the fronts of the stalls framed between posts that support a girder which supports the rafters in mid span. Am I even in the neighborhood?
