Close quarters 12″ sliding compound miter saw
Looking to upgrade my 12″ chop saw to 12″ slider. The only issue is that the setup in my home shop is pretty close quarters, ie I’m looking for a saw that doesnt have super long rails. Specifically, the rails can’t extend any more than 12.5″ from center when the saw is swung out to 45+ degres on either side. Belive it or not, the footprint/swing data is pretty hard to find on manufacturer’s websites. I’ve also looked at the Bosch 12″ Axial-Glide Compact Miter Saw as a possible solution but the reviews for that saw don’t impress me. Does anyone have a recommendation for a saw that they’re happy with that fits this situation?

No Makita
Don't buy a Makita.
Hitachi has a fixed rail saw, that does not take up much space. The saw slides on the rails, rather than the rails sliding through the base. I have not used one so cannot comment on the saw. I have used some other tools from them, seem to be reasonably well built..

Festool Kapex, call and ask for more detailed spec's.
10" saw, but with a flip of a latch it can be made to cut deeper stock.
The size of the saw swung all directions -26"x26"
I don't understand what/why your rails 12-1/2" from center comes in but, the rails themselves are only 17" long. They start behind the fence maybe 8 or 9", extending no where close to 12" from the center of the baseplate.
The saw fence has to be a foot from the wall to allow the backside of the rail mount to operate.
(there's a game on tonight and we're one down in the 8th)
I'll attempt a drawing.......the site sucks on that maneuver........
Bosch makes one that has an accordian hinge that needs no room
Bosch GCM12SD - its called an Axial Glide and can be put right against the wall.
Hitachi C12RSH2
I've got the Hitachi, and it's pretty great. Back of the saw can be pushed right up against the wall with the saw riding the rails. Has a nice laser that's easy to adjust to either side of the cut. You won't want this as a jobsite saw - it weighs a ton. Great for a shop though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WB5IAT-Zlww
