Hi…I hope this isn’t a stupid question, as I’ve got quite a habit of making things more complicated than they need to be, but I’m trying to decide how to install some closet doors.
The rough opening is 42″, and instead of bifold doors I was going to purchase 2 20″ doors and have them open away from each other (sort of like double doors)but I would like to eliminate the stile in the middle. How would I go about doing that? My thoughts are I would just fabricate a set of jambs and then make a door stop that would go across the length of the opening across the top. Do you think that’s all I would need to do?
Thanks!

I can have a millshop hang two 20" doors in a frame to create a 40" twin or wardrobe door that will fit nicely in that 42" opening.
What was the question?

For closet doors that will work fine. You will need to use bullet catches in the top of the doors to keep them closed. And yuou will need to be careful about getting the frame into the opening very square and in one plane. Otherwise it will be too easy to let the bottom legs splay in opposite directions, and then the doors never will meet smoothly.
I'm sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.
Yep, Ed's right, as always. Be sure your jambs are square and good and plumb. I've got regular cabinet door magnets on my double bathroom doors (in-swing, into the bedroom, by the way !) and it works great. Matter of fact, I put a little piece of felt over the magnet, so it doesn't go ka-chunk and wake up the wife in the wee hours.

Yep, ball catches are nice for pass thru doors, but for a closet, I'm with you on the magnetic babes, and I'm going to use that felt tip, thanks<G> There is nothing--absolutely nothing--half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Ernest H. Shepard
Roller catches and ball catches work great.

A roller catch would work well, maybe a little smoother.
I think my bullet catch is the same as your ball catch.
