I’m laying a cobble stone patio over the top of an existing concrete slab. I’m mortaring the stone down with a 3/8 gap in between the stones with the original intent of pouring grout to fill the gaps. Since I started the project I’ve heard that perhaps sweeping in dry grout and wetting it afterward is a good way to go. My question; Is this a good process to use outside and what to use for grout?? I’ve been told mortar is as good as anything, ideas?? suggestions ?? Thanks in advance.

I would use a semi dry 3:1 mix of sand:cement (+ color if required), swept into the joints with a soft broom. Water afterwards with a fine rose watering can or similar. Sharp, or plasterers sand is best.
*I've done what you suggest on a fieldstone patio, the joints were bigger though. Held up for a couple of years before it started cracking. An easier method all around is stone dust, just sweep it in, no worries about mortar splashing out onto the stones. Compacts hard and plants don't like it much, at least no more than cracked mortar.Mike
*b from near wistahwayne, i agree with mike about the stone dust. if you live in a place that has a winter heaving and cracking could be a problem.
*Rick..."Wistah" Ahh, yah...Warchestah?Grew up in Oakdale (West Boylston).
*Thanks for the help I'll let you know how it turns out.
*Mongo, not sure you're in the right part of the country. I spent 4 years in the Sturbridge area, and i would have expected to see "from neah wistah". Good eye, though - I didn't catch it until after your comment.
*Ed, I'm down the road now, in CT. Oakdale (not on most maps) is just a few miles outside of wistah.A few nights ago on CNN they had a story about a city in central MA. The caption read "Warchester," they pronounced it the same.
*b candy gram for mongohey i'm a little closer to leominstah than to wormtown.still cold in either place though
