Went to Menards last night to pick up some 3″ PVC for a toilet drain (I’d like to use 4″, but the main line is 3″).
But anyway, I tell the guy what I was going to use it for and he gives me this Coextruded Cellular Core PVC. What the heck is Coextruded Cellular Core PVC?!
I just wanted regular schedule 40 PVC.

It is a little ligther weight.
Look at the end and you will see foam with a ridgid inside and outside surface.
I *THINK* that I saw someplace that it's useage is limited to either only under ground not not for underground use.
Glad that I could CLARIFIY that for you.

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
Clear as mud.
Why'd they have to go and mess with something I could understand? Schedule 40, 3" PVC... I don't need CHOICES, just give me my dang 3" PVC!!

Around here it's used underground for patio and landscaping drainage. Our kids' place has a run of it that goes about 80 ft. from the back patio to the street. It's lightweight and cheap, white on the outside and black on the inside. Lotsa fun snaking it out in the fall, too. ;-)

Looks like the Coextruded Cellular Core PVC is the leading game in town for 3" PVC. That is all the Lowes had.

ABS DWV piping (but not the fittings) has been sold with a cellular core for 10+ years. Looks like they found a way to do the same with PVC.

So I shouldn't be worried that I'm installing some strange, experimental waste pipe that is going to crack open in 2 or 3 years? Or one that won't hold its joints.

Go ahead and worry all you want. The coextruded PVC is less proven, so we do not really know yet how it will do. The old Sch 40 is well proven. Glad to be of service!Bill
It appears that the Coextruded Cellular Core has a different inside diameter than regular PVC, because that toilet flange sure didn't want to slide into it.

John,
The local term for that pipe you're talking about "foam core PVC". It does not have the crush resistance that regular PVC has. I have also been told that it makes more noise because it does not insulate as well and it will "crackle" more when expanding/contracting.
It is lighter and less expensive, so that's why some like it.
