great minds – I’m restoring the coffer panels in a beautiful coffered ceiling
lath & plaster substrate w/ 3/4 qtr round framing the panels
majority of plaster panels are a mess / stable plaster but w/ cracks, moisture staining or peeling paint from someone most likely putting latex over glossy enamel– it is stable , dry and ready to go : rather than much scraping, taping multiple coats mud, stain primers etc want to put some thin new skin up there 1/8′ masonite board? might glue w/ hot glue to hold while construction adhesive cures and caulk the hopefully 1/16″ minus to 3/4″ qtr round
your input will be most appreciated John
p.s. meant to mention all will be painted and I’ve never used masonite board / panels each app 26″ X 32″

I think the texture of Masonite would show when painted. It tends to swell a bit when moistened. How about MDO or MDF? I'm talking about the paper faced stuff. It paints really well.
You may want to make some T-braces to hold the panels in place while the glue sets.
Masonite will sshow alligator checking in the paint finish eventually and you'll nbe back at the start again.
Anythiong that thin is likely to sag on a ceiling.
I would take the plaster off and replace it with new Gypsum board and finish or use birch plywood to replace it.

and Wayne * thanks for your posts
appreciate your advising me re: masonite I thought artists painted on that stuff!
yes Wayne I've used both mdf and mdo in this very room - I'll call tomorrow and see how "thin" it is available
Piffin you may have called it but I'm running by all I can to avoid pulling that plaster down on us 9 1/2' overhead
is there a smoother "luan" type veneer one might recommend to glue up and ya Wayne I'll use one of those third hand type pole "clamps" to hold them good if that's the route I take
You might look at usings something called "liner paper" I *think*.
It is like wall paper, but it designed to hide all sins and them be painted.
And while I never have tried I understand that papering a ceiling is not a fun job.
But you only have small areas and no patterns to match.
I've used 1/8" birch veneer "door skin" ply. Use a notched trowel and mastic on the plaster. Cross nail some pins into the plaster to hold til the mastic sets up. Works great if that plaster's flat and solid. EliphIno!
That sounds doable. I like that wall paper skin idea too..

There are textured papers, too, of course, meant to be painted and hide irregular surfaces.
>> Masonite will show alligator checking in the paint finish eventually ...
Is that true for both latex and oil paint? Is it the smoothness of the surface, or some chemical interaction, or what?
Not sure, but every time I've ever seen it painted, it is crackled. I would assume the slick surface..
