I have enjoyed using the Hitachi siding nailer. It is dependable and the nails hold well. I have heard concerns about the wire collation becoming rusted under the cedar though. I had one client ask me to staple his siding with, of course, glue collated staples to avoid the rust theory. He was previously a Senco salesman.

Hi David, I have used the Hitachi Drywall nailer with plastic coiled HDGal ring shank fence nails also made by Hitachi. I loved it because it was half of the weight of most coil nailers and had very good depth of drive adjustment. I was using it for cedar shingle siding. Unfortunatly it is discontinued and only took up to 1 3/4" nails (which is plenty for shingles). Other than that, I am using a porter cable ms200 medium crown stapler with very good results. I haven't tried it with lap siding yet.
P.S. I still hand nail anything exposed with stainless steel ring shank nails.
*lots of white cedar shingles out here in southeastern mass. i use either the bostich n-63 coil nailer or my personal favorite an old paslode mustang stapler (very light). some purists still believe that the only way to shingle is with hand nails driven with their grandfathers wooden handled shingle hatchet, but i have never had a problem with the gun nails or with the staples.if you are concerned with deterioration go with the expensive stainless fasteners. when we have both guns going it takes a little time to get the air pressure/nose adjustment balanced so that we do not overdrive the fasteners. i like to see the head of the nail or the crown of the staple flush with the surface of the shingle, just enough to suck it tight.when i am shingling i have both guns set up with a hook that mounts on the air fitting so i can hook it in my hammer loop while i set up the next bunch of shingles, that way the shingles don't fall off on your head when you are bending over to pick up the gun off the planks...don't you hate it when that happens... pneumaticly, scott
*Thanks for the responses guys. Regarding nails, I've checked with Swan and they sell stainless steel ring shanks nails coiled with plastic rather than wire...wondering if they're more or less likely to jam? I'm still trying to pick a gun. Since I'm looking at rather new models, probably not many of you using them yet. Hitachi NV65AH is $430. The Senco SCN55S is $480. I don't know about the Bostich yet. Even though I have a Senco FramePro and like it, I'm tempted to save $50 and go for the Hitachi. Expensive toys, but the time involved in the alternative is not fun.
*I paid only $224 for my porter cable ms200 mail order.

I have the Max 565 coil siding nailer. I'ts great for nailing clapboards with stainless nails that are available. I am currently blind nailing cedar shingles with it and wish hot dipped galvanized nails were avail. Stainless are a little pricey for this application but am afraid the electro galv. will run.

Jon,
Can you give me a little more info on the Max 565? Price? Does it have an adjustable tip? 800#?

Duo-Fast Corporation manufactures a model RCN-60/225NM that uses plastic collated nails for siding. This is important because you can then use non-ferous nails like aluminum and stainless steel (which are virtually impossible to collate). They also sell a hot-dipped galvanized nail for fiber-cement siding. Hitachi has just come out with a new siding nailer that I'm not familiar with, but it's worth checking out. It also uses the plastic collated nails. Good luck!

Try the HDG ring shank fencing nails from Hitachi, they might fit.
