Comfortable Kneepads
I need a new, preferably comfortable, pair of knee pads. I will use them mostly for indoor projects on finished flooring, but I will head outdoors with them on occasion. I’m not a fulltime flooring guy–I only used my last pair a couple/few times a year, so I won’t be investing several hundred dollars. I’m thinking $75 or less. Also, I would love a pair that would be shorts-friendly, is such a thing exists. My last pair of gel pads were pretty comfortable while wearing pants, not so much when it came to shorts. Anybody have any thoughts and or suggestions?

I have looked myself for comfortable knee pads for 30 years. The only ones that were comfortable were dancers knee pads basically a mesh tube with a pad sewn on it. I were shorts most of the time so the straps of the other types just weren't comfortable. The dance pads are but don't last very long. You can get them at any dance wear store. I first learned about them when I was dancing in musical theater.
Well over 40 yrs ago I bought a pair of leather knee pads, maybe from Goldblatt. Padded with a layer of felt. Strap with buckle. Added a couple layers of dense carpet padding over the years. Through many hundreds of yards of concrete and a boatload of tile I used them for many miles of base.
Still In use today when convinced I can get up off the floor. Replaced the straps when the holes wore out, the buckles still on. Oiled a few times to rejuvenate the leather.
Knees still good so I attribute that to the technology of those pads as well as never dwelling on concrete finishing, tile setting, nor base and shoe.
I’m sure the new technology is there but have no need to find out. Best of luck in your search. Review what you find and it might help others newer in the venture.
I like the Jobman pants with the knee pad pockets. No straps around your legs.
Great suggestions all. I have to admit, I was a little skeptical about the dancer's knee pads.
But man! They do look really comfortable! I'm not sure how well they'll hold up, but I'm going to try a pair for the job I'm working on now. I'll let you know.
You could try mountain bike knee pads, too. Burlier than dance pads and designed to be worn with shorts. Examples: https://www.backcountry.com/search?q=knee%20pad&p=group_id:bc-knee-shin-pads
