This is my second semester of night class at the community college furniture class. It was an effort to bring my carpentry skills to a new level, as all my career has been spent in the field, never in a shop. It has been a tremendous learning experience for me, and a great way to connect with others with a passion for building with wood.
This is our fealess leader, Steve Hageman. A guy who’s really dedicated to woodworking, and spreading his love for craftsmanship. A pretty intense guy, and a very good teacher.
The house itself was not so much. It was smaller than Buckingham Palace, rather gray for California, and probably had fewer windows than the Chrysler Building.
I sneaked over to the side entrance and pressed a bell and somewhere a set of chimes made a deep mellow sound like church bells. A man in a striped vest and gilt buttons opened the door, bowed, took my hat and was through for the day.”–

Scraping glue after gluing up a panel, in preparation for the thickness planer. The chunks of squeeze-out glue can ruin the planer blade. This is definitely a safety-glasses activity, as the glue shatters like glass and really flies around when you're scraping hot and heavy.

Michelle is a young architecture student with a goal of studying at Cal Poly, getting some hands-on experience with this class. Hey, this is how Greene and Greene got started! I should add - the belt sander is one tool the instructor doesn't turn over to the students. He claims he's seen too many beautiful projects ruined in few seconds, but I suspect he also likes being involved in the projects himself.

Neat, and I understand your enthusiasm. I just got finished with an 8 week course on bowl turning at a great little, rural community college. 65 and older, you take the course for free, so there are a bunch of codgers that just jumped off their tractors, who just show up for something to do. Ya learn 85 ways to do everything<G>So, what's your project? Outside of the gates the trucks were unloadin',
The weather was hot, a-nearly 90 degrees.
The man standin' next to me, his head was exploding,
Well, I was prayin' the pieces wouldn't fall on me.

Thanks for the pictures. I got started in woodworking via an adult ed program at the local high school. It was something I was always interested in but didn't have the udget to tool up for th etype of projects I was interested in. I also didn't want to get deep into a hobby that I wasn't sure I would enjoy without at least a little experience first.
The program I attended was not great but it gave me the access to equipment I needed. Unfortunately the school closed the shop and there no longer is a local program available.
Be careful though, it can be addicting. that little class 16 years ago turned into this.

Neat pics and a nice looking shop. Not too many of those left. Most of the HS and community colleges around here have liquidated their wood shops. Really a shame, because even as a hobby it is a whole lot more rewarding than sitting in front of the TV or playstation.
I had taken a adult education woodworking class a couple years ago via the community college, but it was held as a guy's personal shop (2 car garage filled with tools), not the college. It was great to have access to all the wonderful tools, but there wasn't really any instruction. He pretty much just said "here's the tools." I think most of the people taking the class were hoping for a bit more instruction.

I think our instructor has just about single-handedly revived the woodshop program here. He is the only instructor, and also teaches machine shop. He personally refinished every workbench in the shop, on his own time, with his wife and daughter helping. He has sunk a small fortune of his own money into equipment. And he constantly battles college bureaucrats who want to relegate what he does to the "artsy craftsy cutesy" category of basket weaving and knitting. Its an uphill battle all the way, but he has brought a real passion and dedication to what he is doing. Honestly, this guy deserves a medal.
Its sad that the community colleges have dropped the ball on construction/vocation education, there is such a dearth of formal teaching available, and we who work in the field see the complete lack of readiness among the newer recruits. Even myself - as a professional contractor/carpenter - where else can I go to get some hands-on training and education in the theory and proper use of shop tools? The house itself was not so much. Cool. I taught night courses for several years, when I was running my own business and after I came back to teaching full time.....met a lot of very nice people. I still run into them regularly, and I think a lot of them learned skills that they are using. It's amazing the number of times that someone would come up to me after a class (usually with routers), and tell me they had been using the equipment wrong and unsafely for a long time.
We no longer run the courses; the higher ups at head office decided all the other campuses (including mine) should charge the same fees as in Metro Halifax..... so overnight they put us out of the adult ed game. We no longer teach any con ed trades courses except Autocad....real shame, as it was a good experience for folks, and brought them into the college to see what we were doing.Cabinetmaker/college woodworking instructor. Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
I've been told that the construction project at the college is facing a similar battle. The class used to build one house a year, with student labor, under the instructors supervision. The house would be sold upon completion, and they say the quality was very high.
Now the college administration thinks they're going to make money at this, so they're going to go to subcontractor labor, with the students watching, and build several a semester (they think).
I really don't know the details, but our instructor has been involved in the program, and I can tell he is completely exasperated by the whole situation."I needed a drink, I needed a lot of life insurance, I needed a vacation, I needed a home in the country. What I had was a coat, a hat and a gun."

We have a high school here in Cedar Rapids Iowa that still does that, they put out a pretty good product. It usually sells fast and the money goes back into it to keep it rolling.
Nice thread

Our local HS district still builds one a year. Nice ones at that.

And wood shop is still offered. I'm hoping my daughter will take a class. We'll see.
I believe they still have Continuing Ed woodworking classes for adults. I took some a few years back.
The community college builds one a year, similar setup, very high quality. The college bureaucrats are looking at the $$$, saying, Hey, lets do nine a year, with subcontractors, while the students stand around and watch. And they don't understand why the college staff isn't excited about it."I needed a drink, I needed a lot of life insurance, I needed a vacation, I needed a home in the country. And wood shop is still offered. I'm hoping my daughter will take a class. We'll see.
Good for her. Even if she has no intentions of doing anything with it it will give her some insight as to how some of this stuff is done - therefore somewhere down the road she will have a good idea what someone is talking about if she has to hire them to do a job.
I used to do a lot of HFH work and one of my biggest complaints, and the major reason for quiting, was that they didnt involve the new HO's(which were predominatly women) with the building process. I always thought they needed to be more hands on so that down the road when a repair was needed they might just be able to do it, or at the least, understand what needed to be done.

It's nice to see community colleges offering this stuff. We've got one near here that will provide and associate's degree in furniture making: http://www.rockinghamcc.edu/course_catalog/A30160.php?n=A

You know, I'll have to check on the make. I know its the largest and most favored jointer in the class - a real sweet model.

Nice job on the pictures. Informative, but also nicely composed. Worthy of appearing in a magazine.
Thanks. I've taken the lion's share of the pics, but several others have contributed also. Karl, the Gulf War vet, is the one that taught us all to think outside the box when composing pictures in the viewfinder. Not just the class, but the photos too, are a team effort."I needed a drink, I needed a lot of life insurance, I needed a vacation, I needed a home in the country. That was a great thread. Thanks.
Thanx Huck!
I know a lot of time went into putting this thread together.
Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
Actually, it wasn't much at all. I already had the pictures, which I was taking for the professor to use on his college website, and for the other students to enjoy (some of whom helped in taking pictures, and in educating me on the use of my digital camera). I had the pictures stored over at flickr.com, and they re-size them when you upload. And it was so easy just to right-click copy, and paste here in a thread.
It was a pleasure to take the class, and therapeutic for me to share my enthusiasm here. Kinda like you'd like some of your friends to get to meet some other of your friends.
BTW, if you haven't checked out flickr.com, you should. Pick a topic, i.e. "woodworking", and type it in the search window. Incredible some of the stuff you'll see. And its free.

That's a great shot. From Flicker?
One of my neices posts a bunch of pictures there. She does a lot of urban graffiti stuff. Not my thing but she's good at it.
Anyways, nice thread.

I did a search over there on "urban graffitti" - some pretty wild stuff. Anyways, I like to search for tags like "treehouse", "toolbox", "craftsman", etc. A lot of the pictures over there are categorized in groups - anyone can form a group, and anyone can join one. Its just a way of posting your picture with other similar pictures.

Yes, it is. The photo is by Craig Jewell, from the 2007 Working With Wood show.
Here is another from a group I administer called "The Craftsman's Toolbox". It is by Maggie, a college teacher in Montreal

Marche has a stressful job at the post office
What's a stressful job at the post office? Is she in charge of perimeter defense?
Seriously, this is a nice thread. Looks like a fun class and a way to meet nice, like-minded people."War is God's way of teaching Americans geography." Ambrose Bierce
What's a stressful job at the post office? Is she in charge of perimeter defense?
..uhh, ever hear the expression "going postal"? There's a reason for that expression.

The class is pretty intense, but fun also, and a great learning experience.

Thanks for the thread, and the pics.
But how are you getting anything done with all the photos you're taking? <G>
I used to take some woodworking courses, but they seem to have dried up around here. I am involved in my local woodturning chapter, so I'm not completely out of the loop.
Man I've been skipping over this thread thinking it was asking about community college classes. Of which I have never taken, so I had no advice. Was I ever wrong.
Great pics. How many nights a week? I assume you pay a fee for materials? Is that for stock materials? And if you want something different do you provide your own? What other info do you have?

Two nights a week, Mon. & Wed. eve. 6-9 PM. Its been tough to make it to class because this semester I started a larger, more demanding work project, but its been so worthwhile. The first semester was very academic, lots of lecture and reading time. The second semester, shown in these pics, is pretty much tool and "lab time" intensive.
Great instructor, very much a hands-on teacher, lots of private mentoring as needed, teaching craftsmanship as a mindset and a way of life, as much as anything else.
The wood provided is rough-sawn ponderosa sugar pine, harvested just for our class, for the ridiculously low price of $45 per student. The ones who opted for hardwoods have paid out of their own pocket. The class also provides glue, dowels, biscuits, screws, and sandpaper. You provide tape measure, hook rule, small try-square, and any stain/varnish, etc.
Its been a great experience for me, as I have never worked in a shop environment, having spent my entire career "in the field". I had never used a jointer, thickness planer, cross-cut sled, shaper, or even a router table. It has definitely taken my skills to a new level. And where else could I go to learn this stuff? Videos, maybe?
But yet the program is in constant danger of being cut, because the college powers-that-be view this class in the same category as macrame and tole painting. You can really sense the instructor's frustration, whenever he talks about it."I needed a drink, I needed a lot of life insurance, I needed a vacation, I needed a home in the country. What I had was a coat, a hat and a gun."

Very cool. Thank you. Man I'd love to take a class like that.
