My shop air comp. is hissing at the unloader valve.
It will stop after 30 or so seconds, but it’s annoying.
I gave everything a shot of Kroil ( the valve and it’s adjacent parts) and it seemed ok for a short while, like maybe 20 or so cycles. It’s sporadic, and of course if I leave the cover off, it won’t do it as often, soon as I cover the pressure switches ( safety, mind you, the OFF lever is right there where a finger can poke) it gets more psychotic.
Any Ideers?

All compressors are psychotic.
IIRC, the unloader valve on mine is a standard "Schrader" valve that is on just about every car and bicycle. If yours is the same you might be able to replace just the little insert thingy.
Sounds like the check valve on the tank is not sealing. Try cleaning if you got the time, otherwise, replace it.
thanks guys, time has been the problem, havent run it in a week, using the small one for now.I'll report my findings.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

I just banged mine with a hammer a few times and it quit hissing.
Banged it a few more times and it quit .........
Who makes the pump? is it speedair (grainger)?. On many pumps of that size there is a standard schrader valve that is mounted directly in line with the crank. A centrifically operated counterwieght depresses the schrader valve when the pump stops, which quickly releases the pressure on the pump head. The motor cannot start the pump if it has pressure on the head and that is why you are blowing your breaker.
I'll bet that if you pull the side cover off the crankcase, you will find a schrader valve that has a worn end on it, which is not allowing the pressure to be released. If it is not worn, then you may have to adjust the depth it is set at.
Much smaller chance that the checkvalve between the tank and pump is bad, but that would probably not make the thing trip the breaker on start-up.

It's a Devilbiss. I'm pretty sure its the unloader that does work at startup, and it gets up to pressure, but still blows after kick out pressure. I can't here it hissing while recharging over the other racket. It's 10yrs old, and really runs fine, just started this odd behavior a few weeks ago. Probably a wad of cat hair in there somewhere. I'll dig into it shortly being as I scored a furnace sq. cage and need to really blow it all out.Oh, it doesn't do it everytime, maybe 4 outta 10 cycles.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

I dont know what configuration that is, but if its the centrifigal type, it does not depress (or should not) the schrader valve when starting, but when it stops it should fully depress the valve which releases any pressure remaining between the pump head and the checkvalve at the tank. If the schrader valve is operating correctly and you are still leaking air for more than a few seconds, then the check valve is leaking air back from the tank into the pump.
My DeWalt popped the safety valve repeatedly this weekend -- the pressure switch wasn't shutting the thing down and it was getting up to around 180 lbs pressure. I wuz thinkin' of sending it down to ya for spare parts!
I took it apart, determined I couldn't fix it easily without crimpers to snug up the hoses, so I banged the pressure switch a few times with a screwdriver and closed it up. Worked OK after that -- at least enough to trim out the room I was working on.
But I'm thinking the problem is probably gonna pop up again after it sits a while. It's only about 2 yrs old, but I got a deal on it so I figure it isn't worth fixing if it does it again.
I was surprised at how the thing was put together inside the plastic housing -- no crankcase at all -- just a belt-driven crank, an exposed pushrod and piston, and about a 2" cylinder.

Everything fits, until you put glue on it.
This is my 5.5 HP 40 gal.
It just hisses when it quits refilling, for a few ( 45-60) seconds.
But if I manually try to restart it while hissing, it'll blow the breaker.I'll mess with it this weekend, I hope, I been either laid up or covered up with work..looking for a happy middle, and come home to a wife with the the "Creeping Crud" I hope I don't catch it.Have a Happy Turkey day.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Same here on the middle ground. I've about concluded it's impossible to find.
Thanks -- gonna fire up the wood-fired oven and do the bird in there w/ cherry smoke. Sweet 'tater pies too. YUM!
You have a goodun too -- hope the wife is well enough to enjoy it with ya.Mike HennessyPittsburgh, PAEverything fits, until you put glue on it.
It's shocking what trash is on the market these days. I just had to replace the pressure relief valve on my Rolair today and that compressor is barely sixteen years old.

Still well within the warranty! Good on ya. ;-)Mike HennessyPittsburgh, PAEverything fits, until you put glue on it.
> I gave everything a shot of Kroil ....
You've got Kroil? How'd you get it? I'm nearly out of SiliKroil and Kreen, and on their web site, they refuse to sell to us common people any more. You have to be a big manufacturer.

That's great. What's the number, I'll try just calling instead of messing with the web site.
