I just purchased a CST/Berger auto level with compensator lock. I’m new to construction and using it for around the home projects. This unit has a push button on the bottom side for the compensator lock, however, I push the button and it releases. This has me questioning if it really is locking anything inside. Slight movement of the level and I can hear parts inside moving around.
So, my newbie questions is, how do I actually lock the compensator for transport?
Thanks!

And what do the directions say?
I do not have this level. If a problem is suspected I'd contact the tool supply where I purchased it. No Help? I'd contact cst berger. Has to be quicker and more informative than this method, especially when you give no model number. In order to not damage your new tool with bad advice-I'd make the call. Then of course report back for us to learn. Best of luck!
You just need to press harder. Hit the button with a hammer.
I also have a CST autolevel. (I think it's a POS, although it's accurate enough when it works.)
When you place the instrument into its case, the lock button contacts a surface of the case and immobilizes the compensator.
Sometimes these things get sticky in use due to grease leaking into the compensator compartment. Pressing and releasing the lock button can sometimes free it up.
Do you know how to check the accuracy of this tool?
