I have read a few articles on composite decking but am now being asked to put in a bid for one in Southern California. I have no experience with the material but like what I’ve read. Does anyone have any insight as to which company makes a reasonable product? (EZ-Deck, CorrectDeck, and on and on…)
I am concerned with ease of use (screws vs. nailing) tensile strength, durability, and whether beginning with conventional framing is reasonable etceteras…
I’ll be building a curved deck extending approx 2′ over a section of the pool and am considering the usual suspects in terms of wood as well.
thanks,
Gordon

if you're talking about Trex -type products.. i like
Trex.. it's solid.. you don't need special edging...comes in two colors...
lots of experience .. a proven track record
*Gordon,I've used trex a little and I would recommend it. Joist spacing of 16o.c. is recomended as well as correct spacing between boards. I would recommend at least counter sinking and using screws and make sure not to drive screw heads too deep to reduce chance of mushrooming. I've heard trex and others are hot to walk on for the first few seasons. Also, color will fade quick in the direct sunlight but it can be stained once it is weathered. cc
*I'll second what crosscutt said on all points, especially on spacing. I tried to use trex on a redecking job with existing 16" o/c, with the customer preferring a diagonal run. This was quickly vetoed by the supplier as too much a risk of sagging between the wider spaces created by the diagonal run.
*Two notes..Trex is available in 5 colors and an alternative to spanning greater than 16" oc with 5/4 material is to use 2x6. It is available in 12-20 foot lengths as is the 5/4 x 6.
